The 2019 Braai was held over the weekend 26th – 27th July at Beechwood Park, Elvaston; near Derby. We have been using this venue for the past 10 years. The owners Colin and Sharon have let us have sole use of this site for our annual gathering. This is great as we can enjoy ourselves without causing offence to people who do not understand the Rhodie way of life….
The weekend got off to an early start as many arrived early to get a good camping spot. Tony Granger came to visit on the Thursday and we had drinks and dinner. Friday was the official opening and the evening started with a 60’s dress theme – many ageing hippies attending. The bar had Castle lager which was appreciated.
The field around the bar area had several stalls selling hot drinks, koeksusters, cakes, flings, biltongs, boerewors rolls, Rhodies clothing, etc.
Saturday was the Boerewors competition where people brought their cooked vors to the Scots tent to be judged. We had entries from individuals and from butchers so a good selection. Plenty vors left after the judges finished so everyone was able to try a bit.
After the vors was the Photo competition. Again at the Scots tent. This is a fun thing. No prizes just the satisfaction of having won. Both these competitions will be held again in 2020. Contact me for the competition subjects etc if interested.
Saturday evening was fancy dress night with drinks and bands playing till late.
Sunday morning was the remembrance service for all service personnel which was well attended. Representing the BSAP were Rob Minchin, Rob Mathews and Rob MacDonald.
The rest of Sunday was spent listening to music around the bar and reminiscing. Amazing how many people are connected to the BSAP via relatives and through the police reserve.
Had a couple of requests for forms to join the Regimental Association. Hopefully they will join up as Associated members.
The next July braai will be at this venue over the weekend 31st July to 2nd August, 2020
