|MESSAGE FROM BRANCH PRESIDENT|
Unsurprisingly, I and other Branch officers have received many calls and contacts following Alan Tom’s recent decision to stand back from Committee duties. I thought it worthwhile to try and clarify the situation, put everybody in the picture and put members’ minds at rest.
These things happen from time to time in the life of committees and associations. As most of you will know, Alan and I have been involved with committee affairs together for just more than 30 years. We both joined the committee in 1987 as young men (together with ‘young’ George Glibbery and Gerry Paxton) – this was a proactive move by the then committee to get the next generation of members involved to ensure the continuity of the Branch.
We have now come full circle and have been actively seeking to get the next generation of members (younger and fitter) to pick up the reins. We have been successful in doing this but, as so often, with new blood comes differences of opinion.
As Alan said in his message, there were differences in thought as to the way forward for the Branch and he decided this could best be served by his standing down. The Branch will be much the sorrier for his absence but I am delighted that he will remain in position as Chair of the BSAP Trust. I am also sure that, like yours truly, he will continue behind the scenes and “offer” his opinion from time to time.
Please be assured that the Branch remains in good hands and the way forward is positive. Mike Coleman indicated 2 years ago that he would be retiring as Chairman and has duly done so. Subject to ratification at the next AGM, whenever that may be, Jim Harris will take over as chairman, Mike Coleman will be his deputy and continue editorship of The Outpost, with Helen Tate taking over the Treasurer’s role whilst other members remain in place.
Please be assured that I have the utmost confidence in the new arrangements and that the Branch will continue to prosper. I hope this message goes some way to allaying any fears or doubts members may have.
